FMS receives three 2017 Powder Metallurgy Design Excellence Awards

FMS Corporation, a custom powder metal (PM) manufacturing company, was honored with three 2017 Powder Metallurgy Excellence awards. Sponsored by Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF), the awards demonstrate outstanding examples of PM's diversity. The awards recognize component fabricators that use PM's flexibility to establish new concepts and process controls and demonstrate the capabilities PM delivers.

FMS Corporation was awarded two of the eight grand prizes. The company also earned one of the ten awards of distinction that were presented in this year's competition.

Grand Prize, Hand Tools/Recreation
FMS received the grand prize in the hand tools/recreation category for a 30-tooth drive sprocket fabricated from sinter-hardened steel with a proprietary machining additive. Manufactured for Polaris Industries, Inc., the part goes into a motorcycle where it is driven by the output shaft of the transmission and in turn drives the rear wheel via a toothed pulley. This PM part offered cost savings over the previously machined part.

Grand Prize, Industrial Motors, Controls/Hydraulics
An additional grand prize was earned by FMS Corporation in the industrial motors, controls/hydraulics category. The stainless-steel fitting, manufactured by FMS, provides a latching mechanism to easily move a safety pin on a hydraulic lever up and out of the way. An innovative ramp design acts as a cam surface to move the pin from one position to the other.

Award of Distinction, Lawn and Garden/Off-highway
FMS Corporation also received the award of distinction in the lawn and garden/off-highway category for a sinter-hardened steel pivot shift made for Team Industries. The part goes into a shifting mechanism in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) transmission. The two sets of journals are a requirement to enable the fork to pivot.
